Temporal keeps long-running work alive

Temporal is an open-source platform for durable execution. You write ordinary code, and it makes sure the work survives crashes, retries and restarts. What it is, what it isn't, and why it matters for AI agents.

Anyone who has built a process that takes more than a few seconds knows the pain: a call times out, a server restarts, and you are left guessing which half of the work actually happened. Temporal exists to take that guessing away. Its pitch is durable execution: the state of your code is saved at every step, so after a failure it simply continues where it stopped.

What it is

An open-source (MIT) platform where you write your business logic as plain code in a workflow. The flaky parts, such as API calls, go into activities, which retry automatically. The Temporal service keeps the state, the timers and the task queues. A workflow can wait for a human, sleep for days or run for months, and a crash in the middle doesn’t lose it.

You can run the service yourself, or let Temporal host it as Temporal Cloud. You write the workflows in your own language and framework with their SDKs.

What it is not

  • Not an AI model or an agent framework. It runs whatever you build, and its current pitch is that agents need exactly this kind of reliability.
  • Not a message queue or a cron job. It sits above those and remembers what your process was doing.
  • Not free of design work. You still have to think in workflows and activities, and keep the workflow code deterministic.

What you get without paying

Quite a lot. The GitHub repo is the source code of the Temporal server itself, under the MIT license, so there is no crippled community edition and no licence fee. To try it on your laptop it takes two commands:

brew install temporal
temporal server start-dev

That starts a local server with a Web UI at localhost:8233, and you can write and run workflows against it with one of the SDKs. The same server is what you can run in production. The price of going that way is not money but work: you host it, operate it and upgrade it yourself. Temporal Cloud is what you pay for when you would rather not, and the site gives new sign-ups some free credits to try it.

What it is good for

Anything that has to finish even when things break: order fulfilment, onboarding, payments, CI/CD, and compensating steps when something halfway through fails. Increasingly also AI agents and pipelines, where a run can take minutes, call flaky tools and wait on a person. That is why it fits next to the orchestrators we have written about.
